The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the United States Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) recently conducted joint maritime exercises in the West Philippine Sea aimed at enhancing military cooperation and operational capabilities. The ninth Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) took place on December 9 and 10 west of Zambales, within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

The AFP deployed key assets including the BRP Jose Rizal (FF150), three FA-50 fighter jets, three A-29B Super Tucano aircraft, a Black Hawk, and a Sokol helicopter. Describing the deployment, the AFP highlighted that these forces reflected the country’s growing operational preparedness and its improved capacity to integrate with allied units in challenging maritime operations.

On the U.S. side, the USS Rafael Peralta (DDG-115), MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, and a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft participated in the exercises. The collaborative activities included division tactics and ship maneuvering exercises designed to strengthen coordination and refine communication protocols between the two militaries.

"These exercises enhanced both forces' ability to operate cohesively in complex maritime environments," the AFP confirmed.

The West Philippine Sea remains an area of strategic significance and tension due to ongoing territorial disputes involving China. Despite the 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration affirming Philippine sovereignty over the contested waters, China continues to assert claims and maintain a presence in the region.

The recent joint exercises underscore the commitment of the Philippines and the United States to uphold maritime security and reinforce their strategic partnership amidst regional challenges.
