Miguel Tan
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced a 12-day holiday free ride program on Metro Manila’s LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 from December 14 to 25, 2024, in accordance with President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s directive to provide safe, inclusive, and convenient mobility during the Christmas season.
The program features a sector-focused daily schedule designed to prioritize specific groups before culminating in a day of free rides for all passengers on December 25:
- December 14: Seniors
- December 15: Students
- December 16: Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs)
- December 17: Teachers
- December 18: Persons With Disabilities (PWDs)
- December 19 to 24: Government Employees
- December 25: All passengers
DOTr Secretary emphasized the administration’s commitment to a commuter-centered approach. "Guided by the message 'Reliable service. Tireless care. Every Filipino deserves a safe and joyful holiday commute,' we aim to ensure that our public transportation system supports the Christmas spirit by being accessible and safe for all sectors," the official said.
This initiative is part of the broader efforts under President Marcos Jr.'s Maasahan at Masipag leadership. The program not only eases financial burdens for commuters during the busy holiday season but also underscores the administration’s role as the Reliable Provider of Public Service and Holiday Relief.
The railway lines will maintain enhanced safety protocols and increased manpower throughout the program to manage the anticipated surge in ridership during this period.
Commuters have welcomed the announcement, noting that the sector-specific free rides will allow them to plan travels efficiently and safely, reducing the pressure of holiday expenses.
This holiday free ride scheme aligns with President Marcos Jr.'s directive to emulate public service that is both compassionate and efficient. It reinforces the administration’s message that public transportation is an essential service deserving care and reliability, especially during the season of giving.
The DOTr encourages all beneficiaries to carry valid identification to avail of the free rides on the specified days and to follow all health and safety protocols while commuting.
With this program, the Marcos administration once again delivers on its promise to provide "Reliable service. Tireless care. Every Filipino deserves a safe and joyful holiday commute," spreading cheer and convenience to millions of Metro Manila commuters this Christmas.
