Radio Reporter Injured Amid Manila Rally as Protesters Clash with Police Near Malacañang
Benilda Vergara
A radio reporter covering a rally in Manila sustained injuries after being struck by a projectile while livestreaming the event on Sunday afternoon. Manny Vargas of DZBB was reporting live near the Manila Police District deployment around 1:30 p.m. when a group of young demonstrators began hurling rocks, bottles, and other hard items toward the police, resulting in Vargas getting hit.
The protesters aimed to advance toward Malacañang but were blocked by large trucks and steel barricades set up to prevent access to the Palace grounds. Police pursued and apprehended several members of the group involved in the disturbance.
Authorities estimate that approximately 3,000 rally participants, composed of students, religious groups, and militant organizations, gathered at Luneta Park after 11 a.m. to protest alleged irregularities in flood control projects. The main assembly concluded peacefully around 1:30 p.m., after which some groups proceeded to EDSA for a concurrent demonstration.
The Manila Police District maintained order throughout the event, ensuring the majority of the protest remained peaceful despite isolated incidents involving some protesters attempting to push through security barriers.
This incident highlights continuing tensions around urban development projects and the diverse groups voicing their concerns through public demonstrations.
