One Dead, Dozens Injured in Manila Protest Violence, DOH Reports

The Department of Health (DOH) confirmed that one person died from a stabbing incident linked to violent protests in Recto, Manila, on Sunday, September 21, 2025. The victim, whose identity remains unknown, was declared dead upon arrival at Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center.
According to the DOH statement released on Monday, 48 people were admitted to the hospital following injuries sustained during the tumultuous protests in Mendiola, involving masked demonstrators.
Among those treated were two policemen who suffered lacerations. Additionally, six other patients presented with a range of injuries including a foot laceration, eye trauma, head trauma, vein injury on the left arm, gunshot wound, and severe arm injuries. Of these, four patients have been discharged after receiving medical care, while two remain hospitalized for further treatment.
Furthermore, 39 protesters are currently undergoing physical examinations as part of pre-incarceration procedures. The DOH emphasized that none of these individuals face immediate health risks.
The department also assured that all patients are protected under the Zero Balance Billing policy, ensuring no out-of-pocket expenses for the treatment received.
Meanwhile, in a press briefing at Malacañang, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla reported no deaths occurred during the weekend’s nationwide anti-corruption rallies, despite instances of violence.
This incident underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding public demonstrations and highlights the critical need for maintaining public safety during mass gatherings.
