Cardinal David Condemns Violence at Mendiola Protest, Urges Peaceful Advocacy
Perfecto Ilagan
Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David voiced his disappointment over the outbreak of violence during the Mendiola protest last Sunday, September 21, which resulted in numerous injuries. While the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president had previously encouraged Filipinos to participate in rallies against corruption, he stressed the need for peaceful conduct and avoiding provocations.
"It is saddening that violence broke out at the Mendiola rally," David remarked, urging demonstrators to "not give in to provocation or violence." He himself took part in the peaceful event held at the EDSA People Power Monument on the same day.
The Cardinal reaffirmed his call for citizens to engage in Sunday demonstrations and future protests championing accountability and integrity in government affairs. "What is more important is our collective stand—firm yet peaceful—for accountability and honesty in government," he stated.
The protests were sparked by recent exposures regarding irregularities in government flood control projects, which implicated several senators, congressmen, the Department of Public Works and Highways, and affiliated contractors.
