The provincial government of Maguindanao del Sur has officially declared a state of calamity following extensive flooding that has severely impacted numerous towns. This resolution, recommended by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), was unanimously approved by the Provincial Board led by Vice Governor Sheikh Hisham Nando. Governor Datu Ali Midtimbang expressed full support for the declaration.
According to Vice Governor Nando, the flooding has affected 14 municipalities and more than 100 barangays, displacing approximately 54,000 families. The continuous heavy rainfall combined with river overflow has exacerbated the situation.
"Flooding is an annual occurrence, but this time, the severity and the number of affected areas have significantly increased," Nando explained. He emphasized that the state of calamity declaration aims to facilitate the immediate release of calamity funds and expedite relief efforts.
In response, the provincial government has distributed initial aid packages consisting of food, hygiene kits, and other essential supplies to the affected residents. Coordination is also underway with the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) government to secure additional assistance.
Vice Governor Nando further urged the national government to provide sustainable and voluntary solutions to address the recurring flooding issues in the province, highlighting the need for long-term mitigation measures.
