CEBU CITY — A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake unexpectedly struck Cebu at 10:40 p.m., interrupting the closing moments of the Miss Asia Pacific International 2025 benefit gala. The unforeseen tremor prompted attendees, including pageant candidates, officials, and guests, to seek protection from falling debris as parts of the ballroom ceiling collapsed.

The celebration, held at a hotel in Cebu's north reclamation area, began with lively performances that showcased local talents and featured prominent figures such as former beauty titleholders, philanthropists, business leaders, and Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro.

During the event, auctions included exquisite items like designer earrings and furniture crafted by internationally acclaimed designers Kenneth Cobonpue and Vito Selma. Forty-two pageant contestants donned Philippine ternos designed by esteemed couturier Cary Santiago, highlighting Filipino artistry ahead of the coronation night scheduled for October 8 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Proceeds from the auction and part of the table sales were pledged to support Operation Smile Philippines Foundation, an organization providing free surgeries to children with facial deformities.

Among the audience was Alphonse Estacio, a Manila-based public affairs professional attending the gala for work. He described the moment the earthquake struck, recalling the increasing tremors and the collapse of the ballroom ceiling. "At first, I thought the tremor would pass quickly during the program’s finale. But as it intensified, I realized it was a significant earthquake. I am still shaken but relieved that everyone in the ballroom is safe," Estacio said.

Following safety protocols, guests took cover under tables and later evacuated to the parking area under the guidance of hotel staff. Water and seating were provided to calm those affected.

Among the contestants, Miss Belgium Jana Janssen sustained an injury after falling during the ensuing confusion. However, the Miss Asia Pacific International organization promptly confirmed that all candidates and their team members are safe. An official statement emphasized, "The organization has taken immediate measures to ensure the well-being of our candidates and staff and remains committed to their continued safety and care."

Expressing solidarity with Cebu residents, the organization extended support to all impacted by the seismic event.

Governor Pamela Baricuatro issued a statement urging local government units to remain vigilant in anticipation of aftershocks. She confirmed that the provincial emergency operations center is actively coordinating with agencies to evaluate the extent of the damage.

This incident underscored the importance of preparedness during large-scale events amid natural disasters.
