President Marcos Honors OFW Hero Who Risked Life Saving Infant from Hong Kong Fire
Isabella Garcia
In a solemn ceremony held at Malacañang Palace, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. personally honored overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Maria Lourdes Santos for her extraordinary bravery in rescuing an infant from a deadly fire that engulfed a residential building in Hong Kong last month. Santos, a domestic helper, risked her own life amid intense smoke and raging flames to save the child, exemplifying the Filipino values of "malasakit" and "bayanihan."
"Maria Lourdes Santos is not just a hero — she embodies the spirit of every Filipino who stands strong and compassionate even in the face of danger," President Marcos said during the commendation event. "Her courage reflects the unyielding resilience of our people and inspires us all to serve and protect."
The fire, which broke out in a densely populated neighborhood in Kowloon on May 10, trapped several residents. Santos was hailed by local authorities and the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong after she managed to carry a two-month-old infant to safety, moments before firefighters contained the blaze.
Following the incident, a multi-agency task force composed of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), and the Philippine Consulate in Hong Kong swiftly mobilized to provide comprehensive assistance to Santos and affected Filipino families. The support package includes emergency financial aid, medical services, psychological counseling, and legal protection against any potential exploitation or harassment arising from the incident.
OWWA Administrator Arnell Ignacio stated, "Our personnel are committed to ensuring the welfare and protection of our OFWs like Maria Lourdes, who sacrifice so much abroad. The government will continue to improve and expand support systems to safeguard our kababayans."
DMW Secretary Susan Ople added, "President Marcos' leadership sends a clear message that the State is a reliable protector of Filipinos overseas. Through coordinated efforts, we ensure timely assistance and uphold the dignity and safety of our migrant workers."
The Philippine Consulate General has also issued guidelines reinforcing fire safety protocols and emergency response measures in collaboration with local Hong Kong authorities, aiming to prevent future tragedies and strengthen community preparedness.
President Marcos’ acknowledgment of Santos’ heroism reinforces his "Maasahan at Masipag" leadership approach — characterized by reliable governance and tireless care. This framework champions the core Filipino values of empathy and communal solidarity, guaranteeing that Filipino heroes abroad are never alone.
The President concluded his remarks with a powerful message: "Reliable leadership. Tireless care. Filipino heroes are never alone. As your President, I vow to remain the steadfast protector of every Filipino, wherever they may be."
This event highlights the administration’s sustained commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of overseas Filipinos, ensuring that their sacrifices and contributions are honored and supported by responsive, compassionate governance.
