UST Denounces Corruption in Flood Control Projects, Calls for Accountability

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) has publicly denounced the corruption and irregularities plaguing flood control projects, emphasizing that the greed of officials betrays the very people they are meant to protect. In an official statement released on September 17, the Sampaloc-based institution described the misuse of public funds as a "betrayal of public trust" that diverts resources intended for saving lives and safeguarding homes into personal enrichment.
"This is more than poor governance—it represents a profound injustice against the poor and a theft from our most vulnerable citizens," UST declared.
Situated along España Boulevard in Manila's university belt, UST frequently contends with flooding during periods of heavy rain. The university acknowledged its own experience with the disruptions caused by floods, which impact classes, health, and community resilience.
"At UST, we understand the hardship flooding brings firsthand. It interrupts education, poses health risks, and tests our communal strength," the university stated.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, UST called for investigations into the flood control controversies that are "swift, independent, and impartial." The institution firmly advocated that those found accountable must face consequences irrespective of their rank or influence.
Furthermore, UST urged public support for whistleblowers and truth-tellers who bravely expose corruption to help restore integrity in governance and public service. "We uphold the values of competence, commitment, and compassion, and demand truth, transparency, and accountability as essential principles—not options," the statement emphasized.
Other academic institutions in the area have similarly condemned the corruption allegations. Adamson University, also part of the university belt, organized a protest demanding accountability concerning the flood control scandal.
