UN Condemns Deadly Gang Attack in Haitian Fishing Village Amid Rising Violence

The United Nations Secretary-General has strongly condemned the recent attack by armed gangs in a fishing village north of Haiti’s capital, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 40 individuals. The assault, which occurred Thursday night in Labodrie, highlights the growing spread of gang violence beyond Port-au-Prince.

A UN statement expressed grave concern over the escalating violence in Haiti and called on Haitian authorities to hold accountable those responsible for these and other human rights violations. "The Secretary-General is alarmed by the levels of violence rocking Haiti and urges the Haitian authorities to ensure that perpetrators of these and all other human rights abuses and violations are brought to justice," the statement read.

The National Police spokesperson declined to provide comments regarding the reported fatalities.

According to local media reports, the gangs set fire to Labodrie following the killing of a local gang leader known as Vladimir. Vladimir was affiliated with Viv Ansanm, a gang coalition that the United States designated as a terrorist organization in May.

The U.S. State Department has identified Viv Ansanm as a key driver of instability and violence in Haiti. Members of this alliance have seized control of significant portions of Port-au-Prince and have extended their influence into adjacent areas, exacerbating security challenges in the country.
