Gabriela Women’s Party Secures 64th Party-List Seat in Midterm Elections

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) officially declared the Gabriela Women’s Party as the recipient of the 64th party-list seat on Wednesday, September 17, following the recent midterm elections in Metro Manila, Philippines. Comelec Chairman George Garcia, along with Commissioners Rey Bulay, Ernesto Maceda Jr., and Maria Norina Tangaro-Casingal, awarded the certificate of proclamation to the party-list group at the Comelec headquarters in Manila.

Sarah Elago, a seasoned legislator who previously served as the representative of the Kabataan party-list during the 17th and 18th Congresses, will now serve as Gabriela’s voice in the 20th Congress. Gabriela is widely recognized for championing reforms that benefit women, children, and the LGBTQIA+ community.

In a statement posted on their official Facebook page, Gabriela declared, "Lahat ng kurakot, lagot sa Gabriela!" which translates to "All corrupt individuals will face consequences with Gabriela."

The addition of Gabriela’s seat fulfills the Commission’s mandate to ensure that 20 percent of the House of Representatives is composed of party-list representatives, addressing the previous count of only 63 proclaimed winners. This development reinforces the inclusivity and representation of marginalized sectors in the legislative process.
