Crispina Endaya
On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, a fire struck Sitio McArthur in Barangay Tejero, Cebu City, leaving numerous residents displaced. According to initial estimates from the Cebu City Government, the blaze affected 42 houses, with 32 completely destroyed.
Authorities continue to conduct investigations to determine the fire’s cause. One of the victims, identified as "Doms," suspects that illegal drug use among neighbors might have triggered the incident. He recounted seeing two individuals hurriedly exit the house where the fire originated.
Meanwhile, Rey Villaro, a relative of the property owner from where the fire started, mentioned varying accounts regarding the fire’s cause circulating among residents.
Barangay Captain Harold Seno announced plans to support the affected families through two main initiatives. The first involves constructing a five-story condominium on the burned site, while the second entails renting warehouse space to accommodate those displaced. City officials aim to complete the condominium within a year.
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival visited the temporary shelter at the Tejero Sports Complex to check on the victims' conditions. He stated, "As of now we still can’t give anything from the government; however, I have some small cash and that’s what I gave."
