Carla Abellana Embraces Role as Vocal Advocate Amid Online Backlash

Perfecto Ilagan

Kapuso actress Carla Abellana has been dubbed the internet’s "Patron Saint for Concerned Citizens," a label she finds both amusing and flattering. Speaking on "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda," she expressed surprise at how Filipinos come up with creative titles but appreciates the recognition it brings.\n\n"How do they think of such titles? But in a way, I feel honored because it means I am getting attention," she said.\n\nCarla has been vocal about various issues involving government and private sector services through her social media platforms. Her candid expressions of frustration and concern have gained the support of many netizens.\n\nShe explained that her activism is driven by personal impact: "As long as I am directly affected or involved, that’s when my frustration, anger, and helplessness come out."\n\nThe actress admitted that she was not always outspoken but felt compelled to break her silence due to growing frustrations. "I used to be quiet, not one to interfere. But I think it’s time to use my voice because staying silent is enough. If something affects you, you should speak up," she said.\n\nAddressing the negative reactions she receives on social media, Carla acknowledged that facing criticism is a natural consequence of being vocal. She noted that some netizens even dredge up her past relationships to respond negatively.\n\n"It’s part of the risk you take—knowing not everyone will agree with you. Of course, some will get angry and react negatively, which is inevitable," she said. "I’m used to it because in this industry, even unrelated past things get brought up and used. Honestly, it’s nothing to me. I’m ready for it."\n\nCurrently, Carla stars in the film "Selda Tres" alongside JM De Guzman and Cesar Montano. She also recently concluded her role in the series "Widows' War," which ended in January. In addition to acting, she launched her own handmade goods brand, Artisana, in July.\n
